The found footage angle was exploited so masterfully by both directors on the previous go-arounds and the switch back to normality dulled down the entire zombie affair. No longer was I sitting on edge of my seat or darting my eyes fervently around the screen, instead I found myself just comfortably watching our characters trying to avoid becoming another shambling undead soldier. While Plaza doesn’t disappoint in setting up both vicious and visually appealing sequences (playing with newfound effects like slow motion and quick cuts), some of the intensity found in each original film seems to have been lost. They’ve also occupied a unique position in the horror genre in that they can serve as sociopolitical allegories. Paco Plaza must have heard those grumblings too, opting to embrace the cinematic beauty that is our beloved third person “fly on the wall” filmmaking. If you’ve not seen Rec then make sure you watch it. The finale is thrilling & while it doesn’t sequel-bait it leaves plenty of room for further films (which there would be). Tense from beginning to end, Rec is a horror where you will slowly lose all hope. The acting is solid from everyone, being a Spanish horror film there could be the possibility of nuances getting lost in translation but that isn’t the case here.

The shaky camera work, the darkened scenes, the close-ups…it all makes sense in relation to what is happening in the apartment block. At this stage found-footage wasn’t the albatross it would become & while many of the more frustrating elements about it are present here, it rarely detracts from the enjoyment.
